2022 Beginning Band Bootcamp

First-time flutists and families learn how make the instrument work with the help of Luke Moyta at the D200 Beginning Band Bootcamp.

District 200's 5th-grade students and families participated in the annual Beginning Band Bootcamp in September. Hosted by Debbie Schweihs and Amanda Storer, the bootcamp included an after-school instrument delivery and first lesson that involved both students and parents. In addition to learning how to make musical sounds, the first lessons included instruction on how to assemble, care for, and disassemble instruments.

"We bring in other music teachers form D200 to help out so that we can have very personalized attention for this first lesson," Storer said.

Katy Holub, Bill Kraemer-Simpson, Luke Moyta, Rich Stiles, and Duane Peiffer all shared their time and expertise.

"It's a very fun and rewarding way to start our band lessons," Storer added. "Sure it's extra time, but it pays off because we involve the parents and get to make connections across the district with students and the rest of the band and general music staff."
